Summer Bedding Plants, When is the Best Time?

Are you eager to get into your garden and wondering when is the best time to plant your summer bedding plants?! Well hold off and don’t be drawn in by the sun!

Like most Brits, as soon as we see a bit of sun, the shorts are out with our pale legs on show, the soft tops are down and we want to get our gardens ready for the barbeques! The trouble is that with the warmer spring days there are chances of still getting frosty nights, so as our summer jackets are ok during the day, the winter scarfs are still needed in the evening.

When the spring days are upon us many will flock to the large garden centres instead of smaller independent plant sellers and florists. The garden centres are happy to sell summer bedding plants very early practically as soon as the spring half term. The trouble with them passing the early sales of the summer bedding plants is that they are likely to die from the spring frosts which can hit as late as early May! Many customers will think that they have done something wrong and will return to the Garden Centre to buy more bedding plants when they are likely to have been killed off by the frost when they are planted out too early.

Here at the Flower Fountain, we always hold off selling summer bedding plants until we are pretty sure that we have had the last frost. If it’s still too close to call we will tell our customers to be careful in planting them out too early.

Last year we did have a really late frost which did catch quite a few out! Even some of our veteran allotment friends too! This year we have been looking at the weather charts and holding off stocking the bedding plants as we like to think of our reputation and customers pockets rather than our sales. We always aim to provide the best quality flowers and plants with advice on how to care for them and we prefer not to sell our summer bedding plants too early just so we can increase sales when we think there still may be a chance of frost.

After closely watching the weather using a very informative website call Ventusky we are pretty confident that we have seen the last frost of spring and will start to stock our summer bedding plants for customers to spruce up their gardens. A late frost could still hit so on the colder nights, pots can be placed inside a greenhouse/shed or even garage to protect them from frost and plants in the garden can be covered overnight to help to keep off the frost.
